What a wonderful sea trout premiere!
Finally the season is on for us West Coasters too, and what a premiere it has been. For obvious reasons, we in the shop have not been able to spend as much time in the water as many others during the weekend, but we have managed to squeeze in a few hours.
Very good condition of this year's sea trout
Many of you took time off on Friday 1 April to celebrate this very holy day. Already early in the morning, the reports started pouring in with pictures of big, shiny, well-fed sea trout. And that theme continued over the weekend, lots of fish, big fish, but perhaps above all many in very good condition, fun!
Best fly in spring (with tie description)
As usual in cold water, strong colors usually work best and so also this year. Every fish I have personally caught has fallen to a Piglet tied on Craft Fur in Fl. Orange. I have brought the fly home relatively slowly with long pulls and long pauses. Binding description of the undersigned's Pattegris variant is at the bottom of the post.
Follow the tide for better fishing
Sea trout run really shallow this time of year, so look for large bays that quickly get warmer than out in the deep. These bays tend to fill with sea trout when the sea level is in a rising phase, I use the "Tide near me" app and prefer to fish when the curve is at the bottom right up until it reaches the top.

- CRAFT FUR FL. ORANGE
- EASY SHRIMP EYES BLACK
- ANTHRON YARN WHITE
INSTRUCTIONS
Wind the binding thread down to the beginning of the hook bend and create a butt of dubbing in the color UV Slow Burn Flame.
Take some more of the same dubbing (like the butt) and pull it through your fingers to get all the fibers in the same direction. These fibers must then be tied in like a small wing.
After the wing, create a small pad of dubbing in the color Uv Steelhead Torch. This pillow should then make the shrimp eyes come up a little.
Tie on the shrimp eyes so that the eyes are level with the back of the hook.
Make a dubbing loop and prepare some craftfur in a clip.
Then wrap your craft fur 2-3 turns and tie it back to create a shrimpy look.
In the same place, you then tie in a piece of nylon line which will then be used as a rib. You also tie in a dubbing loop that will be used to wrap the body with additional craft fur.
Then dub the entire body with the Uv Steelhead Torch. Try to achieve a good tapering, where the body is a little thicker at the back and narrower at the front.
Then prepare another fair amount of craft fur in your clamp. Remember to spread the material properly as it is to be wrapped over the entire body.
Wind your dubbing loop towards the hook eye.
Tie in some antron yarn in the front.
Then fold your Antron Yarn back and catch with the nylon line you tied in at an earlier stage.
Then brush the body thoroughly. Finish with a whip finish.
